HOUSE OF HEALTH
Optimal health can be compared to a well-constructed building.
Before construction begins, it must be ascertained that the ground or bedrock is solid enough to hold the weight of the structure. Secondly a strong foundation must be laid on this bedrock. Only when this foundation is secure are the weight-bearing pillars & walls added, providing support for the upper stories and roof.
What are the pillars supporting good health?
When I ask patients and friends this question, NUTRITION and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY are most commonly mentioned.
To these must be added: STRESS CONTROL, CLEAN ENVIRONMENT(including air, water, and adequate sunshine), and FREEDOM FROM ADDICTIONS (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, work, etc). Recently SOCIAL CONNECTION to supportive friends and family has been shown to be vitally important in the construction of our metaphorical house of health.
But what is the Foundation on which these pillars rest?
My nomination for this strong Foundation supporting the pillars is RESTORATIVE or REFRESHING SLEEP.
Undergirding and supporting the entire structure, including the foundation, is a solid bedrock. The bedrock of our health is TRUST in GOD.
Many scientists have come to believe that the only way to explain the ultra-complicated biology of our human existence is the concept of an Intelligent Designer. This implies that our existence here on this planet if NOT a result of pure chance.
If this Intelligent Designer is alive and interested in us on a personal level, one conclusion is that our lives have purpose and meaning.
TRUST in God, is trusting that God will reveal the purpose and meaning of life to us, and then empower us to live in harmony with that revelation.
A healthy balanced life includes this bedrock of TRUST, a foundation of RESTORATIVE SLEEP, and pillars of NUTRITION, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, STRESS CONTROL, CLEAN ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL CONNECTION, and FREEDOM FROM ADDICTIONS.
